Databases and digital resources

Please remember about the possibility to use electronic sources. The University of Silesia subscribes over 60 databases (including many full-text databases), which share several dozen thousand electronic journals and about 250,000 books.

A majority of these databases can be used remotely, i.e. from any device with access to Internet (also outside the computer network of the University of Silesia). You can use the sources remotely on the condition that you have an active library account in the library system of the University of Silesia (Integro). Authorization is executed through the HAN system. Please enter the same login (PESEL or account number) and password as in the library system (Integro online catalogue).

The library website also contains information on the possibility to open the account remotely in Integro system.

The databases can be used by employees, retired employees of the University of Silesia and also students of all degrees and postgraduate students at the University of Silesia.

The website of the Library contains the list of all subscribed electronic sources. The remotely accessible databases have a special link described as HAN US. This link takes you to the login page and after correct authorization, to the appropriate database. In the case of sources with a specific access location indicated (e.g. Law Library of the University of Silesia), you can only use them after sending a request to the following e-mail address: zapytaj@ciniba.edu.p.

In the case of any problem with access to the databases, use or selection of the appropriate source, please contact us by phone (32-786-51-33) or e-mail (zapytaj@ciniba.edu.pl).

The library particularly recommends the full-text databases, which can be used not only for research work, but also as a teaching aid (e.g. for e-learning classes or to suggest the use of specific handbooks to students).

Additional forms of distance learning at home

If you want to develop without leaving home, there are many options - here we present some of them:

ResearchGate
ResearchGate is a professional social network for scientists. It enables sharing publications and research results. Register free-of-charge and check if your favourite lecturer published there any content which is interesting for you. Search for sources to your own studies, establishing contacts with experts, or share your own scientific achievements with your peers.

TED
TED is a database with conferences of scientific organisations which contains many recordings of interesting speeches on different topics. On TED talks YouTube channel you will find many videos that will expand your horizons and make you think.

Internet Television of the University of Silesia
Let us not forget about our own media! YouTube channel of the Internet Television of the University of Silesia contains scientific programmes and videos about the life of our University.

Udemy platform
We recommend the Udemy platform to everyone who is ready to invest a bit in the development of their skills. We will find there a wide choice of paid and free courses, published by many instructors, in different fields: from programming to guitar playing.  Remember! Buying a course does not give you competencies. You have to use the materials available in the course regularly. Plan some time for the course. Watch the available recordings carefully and consciously. Don’t rush - repeat and practise the newly learnt points. Award yourself for completed lessons with something you like :) And if you are a specialist in a specific discipline, you may start cooperation with Udemy and record your own courses.

W3schools
Do you want to learn the secrets of programming? You can start by using the w3schools website. You will find there free online materials to learn and practise individually the following languages: JavaScript, Python, PHP, SQL and HTML.

The Odin Project
Do you want to be a website specialist? Try learning through theodinproject.com. You can learn there the secrets of JavaScript, HTML and CSS, related to designing websites.

Duolingo
Popular, funny and free app that helps improve the knowledge of selected foreign languages. It uses the elements of gamification to make language learning more attractive. Set up an account and use it online, or download the app to your mobile phone from Duolingo website and practise regularly, gaining points. With Polish language you can only start the English course, but if you already know English, you can open many different courses (e.g. English-German, English-Spanish, or even English-Japanese and English-Arab).

Coursera
It consists of more than 2,000 courses in one place, developed by scientists and practitioners from over 140 best universities and colleges around the world! If you are looking for an interdisciplinary offer, Coursera is the app for you. The courses are available both in paid and free versions. As a free, virtual student, you will have access to videos, texts and all basic educational materials.

YEP
Use your smartphone and improve your soft skills thanks to a mobile text game! When you start the game, you “meet” and develop artificial intelligence, HalX algorithm, which, depending on your choices, will transfer you to one of the following worlds: dangerous corporations, gangsters, cybercriminals or secret services. While creating your history, you complete tasks related to 8 social skills: analytics, self-expression, establishment of network of contacts, communication, entrepreneurship and personal development.
The game is available on iOS and
Android.

Google Arts & Culture enables you to visit virtually the most famous museums in the world, watch works of art from a close range, as well as browse through thousands of articles, photographs, films and manuscripts shared by museums and cultural institutions. More than 2,000 cultural institutions from 84 countries have already shared their collections.
The website is also available in mobile version: iOS and
Android.

Google Earth - you can see the entire world at home! Google Earth has enabled everyone to watch the world from the sky for many years, thanks to satellite photos, 3D terrain views of the whole globe and 3D buildings in hundreds of cities around the world. However, not everyone knows that the “Discoverer” functionality allows you to see the world from a new perspective and take part in trips created by e.g. BBC Earth, NASA and National Geographic. The platform is also available for mobile devices.
